Arachnid Defense

Maintain a
Web-Free Home

Spiders invade homes for two reasons: hunting insects and finding mates. Controlling their food source is the key to controlling the spiders.

Why Your Home Attracts Spiders

Victoria is home to thousands of spider species, from the reclusive White-Tail to the web-spinning Redback. While most prefer the outdoors, they will move inside to escape extreme heat or heavy rain, or simply because your home offers an abundance of insects to eat.

1 Frequent De-Webbing

Spiders are tenacious. If you knock down a web, they often rebuild. But persistent removal forces them to relocate.

  • Vacuum cornices and corners weekly to remove webs and egg sacs.
  • Sweep down eaves, gutters, and window frames outside.
  • Check behind furniture for "messy" webs (typical of Redbacks or Black House Spiders).

2 Lighting Control

Lights attract moths and mosquitoes. Spiders build webs where the food is.

  • Switch outdoor lights to yellow "bug" bulbs or motion sensors to reduce insect attraction.
  • Use heavy blinds or curtains to stop indoor light from shining out at night.
  • Turn off porch lights when not in use.

3 Seal The Perimeter

Huntsman and White-Tail spiders are hunters—they wander in through gaps under doors and windows.

  • Install weather stripping on all exterior doors.
  • Repair damaged flyscreens immediately.
  • Seal cracks in the foundation and around utility pipes with silicone or caulk.

4 Garden Management

Dense vegetation against the house provides the perfect bridge for spiders to access your windows and eaves.

  • Trim bushes and trees away from the exterior walls.
  • Remove wood piles, rocks, and debris from near the house foundation.
  • Shake out gardening gloves and shoes left outside before putting them on.

The "Web-Free" Audit Checklist

Run this check before summer to minimize spider activity.

  • Check kids' outdoor toys and cubby houses for Redbacks.
  • Clear out the letterbox (a favourite Huntsman hideout).
  • Sweep under outdoor furniture and BBQ covers.
  • Shake out stored blankets or clothes that haven't been used in months.
  • Inspect vents and weep holes—are they clear of webs?

Need a Professional Barrier?

While prevention helps, a residual barrier spray is the most effective way to stop spiders from crossing your threshold.
